The closure of the Ewald colliery in 2000 marked the beginning of a massive landscape redevelopment, with the Hoheward and Hoppenbruch slagheaps at its heart. Together with Ewald and the Recklinghausen-Hochlarmark district park, the largest contiguous slag heap landscape of the coal mining industry in Europe now forms the Hoheward Landscape Park.
